As a non-profit, CACHA requires its volunteer nurses to pay for their own expenses, which can total anywhere between $3,500-$5,000 (expenses include flight, food and accommodation, and medical supplies). To raise funds for this purpose, Burcher and Chamberlain, who are nurses at Queensway Carlton Hospital, approached Gateway. “We found Gateway online and after considering others,” explains Burcher, “we chose Gateway because their pricing is competitive and the production process is so simple. Unlike other companies out there we were able to submit recipes online through one form. The other companies would have required all our group members to submit separately, which would have been unworkable.”

Gateway’s fundraising cookbooks are part of an overall fundraising campaign designed to raise funds for their mission, this one destined for Ukerewe Island in Tanzania in April of 2012. “We’re holding a pub night, where we’ll sell more books. We’ve posted information on Facebook and Twitter and we’re sending books to friends and family. The books look great. We sold over a hundred pre-orders and after receiving them we sold another fifty.”

The World's Kitchen Cookbook

How much would you pay to dine with the President of the United States? Well, for just $15 you can dine LIKE the President of the United States.

That’s the price for a copy of “The World’s Kitchen Cookbook“, which contains the Obama family chili recipe, submitted by First Lady Michelle Obama via her scheduling office. The presidential concoction is among hundreds of dishes showcased in the unique, globally inspired cookbook produced by The International Club students at Stone Mountain High School in DeKalb County, Georgia.

Just like the students who created “The World’s Kitchen Cookbook” the recipes hail from all corners of the globe including Spain, Vietnam, Cambodia, East Africa, Bosnia and other places. The compilation also features pictures and educational data such as international currency information, biographies on global heads of state and historical facts.

Lisa Fátimah Armorer, the club’s sponsor, says that the fundraising cookbook is a useful resource that can teach people about the very places from which the featured dishes originate. She notes that the international flavors highlighted in the fundraising cookbook are authentic, as they were provided by the families of students who comprise the school’s International Club.

And it was Ms. Armorer’s own persistence that led to the acquisition of the Obama family chili recipe for the project, which was published in 2009 by Gateway Publishing’s fundraising cookbook division.

“It’s definitely one of the more unique cookbooks that we’ve been a part of,” says Rhonda Pineau, Sales and Marketing Manager of Gateway’s cookbook publishing division. “Between the President’s chili and all the great global recipes it’s no surprise their initiative has been so successful!”

“The collaborative effort of people from myriad backgrounds, cities, states and countries produced a masterpiece,” adds Carolyn D. Williams, Principal of Stone Mountain High School.

The first book, “For The Breasts of Friends”, was produced to help the women deal with the grief of losing friends and family members to breast cancer. Featuring 400+ recipes from the authors, along with breast cancer facts, advice, and heartwarming quotes for women, the book quickly surpassed its modest sales targets and has already raised more than $500,000 to date.

A follow-up cookbook, titled “For the Breasts and the Rest of Friends” was produced in 2006, and it became a national bestseller in just one month. Like its predecessor, the book includes more than 400 recipes along with helpful breast cancer-related information, quotes, and quips intended to both empathize with and inspire those dealing — directly or indirectly — with the illness. The recipes in this edition were donated by family and friends of the authors.

In 2008, the group released a third fundraising cookbook destined for best-selling status — which it achieved based on pre-orders alone. “Breast Wishes from Breast Friends”, was released before Mother’s Day last year and includes recipes gathered from breast cancer survivors. It’s dedicated to women living with and in spite of breast cancer.

Priced at $19.95 each, the cookbooks are an excellent fundraiser because they are both affordable and represent good value. From an initial order of just 2500 copies, the group has re-ordered many times at larger quantities that enable greater discounts and a reduced per-unit cost.

A few of the cooks in the Grandmothers Helping Grandmothers Fundraising Cookbook

We at Gateway Publishing are proud to start off our new Cookbook Fundraiser Blog with our most recent fundraising success story:  Grandmothers Helping Grandmothers.

This Fredericton chapter is one of 220 independent groups across Canada and beyond that are raising money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, supporting the millions of grandmothers in Africa who are raising grandchildren orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Grandmothers Helping Grandmothers are slightly different from most Grandmother groups as they also support a small Ottawa-based NGO (Non-governmental Organization), Help Lesotho, which also has a grandmothers’ support program.

We were first approached by Maggie Clarke in June of this year with their cookbook idea and were almost as excited as they were to take part in this fundraising event.

Their initial order of 1,000 cookbooks was delivered in July and just yesterday, Sept, 16, we received this email from Maggie:

“Our Cookbook is so successful that we have decided to order another 1,000.  We had our Launch last night and they are doing an article on it in the local paper on Wednesday.”
