FUNDRAISING COOKBOOKS TO THE RESCUE!

V0320coverCoiledOver the years Gateway Publishing has had the privilege of helping out many animal rescue groups with their fundraising objectives. Cookbooks have proven to be a valuable tool in raising cash and creating awareness of various animal causes. Not only do animal shelters in general have need of fundraising, but there are even specialty rescue groups focusing on particular dog breeds, like Greyhounds, Schnauzers, Pit-bulls and Daschunds, to name a few. Just about every dog breed (and cats and horses, too) have special groups devoted to their cause. These groups speak for creatures who have no voice. We are so proud of our animal rescue fundraising cookbooks. Why don’t you call us and see how we can help you help your furry friends? “Folk will know how large your soul is, by the way you treat a dog!” – Charles F. Interview with the Nurses

V0282coverCoiledHelping people in need can some times be complicated, especially when it’s in Africa. But when nurses Amanda Burcher and Jessica Chamberlain found out about the Canada Africa Community Health Alliance, or CACHA, they jumped at the chance to get involved. CACHA is a humanitarian organization that provides medical care, knowledge, and support to remote African communities. CACHA orchestrates missions to Africa 20 times each year.

As a non-profit, CACHA requires its volunteer nurses to pay for their own expenses, which can total anywhere between $3,500-$5,000 (expenses include flight, food and accommodation, and medical supplies). To raise funds for this purpose, Burcher and Chamberlain, who are nurses at Queensway Carlton Hospital, approached Gateway. “We found Gateway online and after considering others,” explains Burcher, “we chose Gateway because their pricing is competitive and the production process is so simple. Unlike other companies out there we were able to submit recipes online through one form. The other companies would have required all our group members to submit separately, which would have been unworkable.”

Gateway’s fundraising cookbooks are part of an overall fundraising campaign designed to raise funds for their mission, this one destined for Ukerewe Island in Tanzania in April of 2012. “We’re holding a pub night, where we’ll sell more books. We’ve posted information on Facebook and Twitter and we’re sending books to friends and family. The books look great. We sold over a hundred pre-orders and after receiving them we sold another fifty.”

To purchase Amanda and Jessica’s Cookbook, email at amburcher@gmail.com. The cookbook is a unique collection of recipes typically found at a potluck dinner called “Potluck Stat – Nurses for Tanzania”.

HOW ONE PHONE CALL RESULTED IN A $1,000,000 FUNDRAISING SUCCESS

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?

When Gateway Publishing first got the call from Breast Friends way back in 2004 they had no idea what lay ahead.  At the time, Breast Friends was 10 ladies from small town Saskatchewan bound by the goal of producing a cookbook to raise money for breast cancer.  Like many Gateway customers, Breast Friends started with a long list of proven recipes and a few stories to illustrate the meaning behind their cause.  The first cookbook was a success, which lead shortly afterward to another call from Breast Friends for a second cookbook.  The trend continued.  A third and fourth cookbook followed, setting the stage for a fifth, recently announced for 2012.

Book4CoiledThe Breast Friends success story simply kept rolling along as this group of energetic women achieved heights hardly imaginable in 2004.  Just last year, Breasts surpassed the $1,000,000 mark in cancer related donations, they made an appearance on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, and they became the subject of a feature story in France’s Gourmond Magazine, an internationally known culinary publication.

Gateway Cookbooks has been there every step of the way, doing everything from assembling cookbook recipes, to managing the design of the book’s cover, to printing the book on one of its state of the art digital printers, to packaging and shipping the cookbooks to Breast Friends’ distribution centre in Foam Lake.  “We’re there to help people achieve their dreams,” says Rhonda Pineau, Gateway’s Sales and Marketing Manager.  “Breast Friends are doing important things to change lives.  Just being part of that makes you feel good about what you’re doing, which makes us work that much harder.”

After building such strong relationships with Breast Friends, the future appeared to be set but in an ironic twist of fate, in November 2009, Pineau was diagnosed breast cancer.  Breast Friends called, as they often did, but not to order another cookbook.  This time their call was made to offer to pay for a three-day seminar at “Inspire Health”, a Vancouver-based, non-profit cancer treatment centre.  Pineau was both grateful and excited about the prospect of a fresh start on her treatment.  “The program was life changing.  If it weren’t for the friendship we had developed with Breast Friends I’m not sure what would have happened.”

People often talk about building relationships through business, but with Gateway, relationships go beyond the bottom line.  According to Gloria Nickel, Production Coordinator at Gateway, “Our customers are often people working toward some type of emotional outcome.  Whether it’s breast cancer fundraising like it is with Breast Friends, school fundraising, or other non-profit charity groups, cookbooks represent an emotional stage in people’s lives.  The cookbook becomes a symbol for positive change, a place for people to share recipes, memories and wonderful stories about the things that make life special.”

Gateway Publishing Cookbooks is a publisher of cookbooks for fundraising, donor gifts, corporate recognition, weddings, and family memories.  Gateway is part of Gateway Group – a family-owned collection of business units specializing in community based publishing and publishing related products.  The Group’s three units include Gateway Publishing Cookbooks, Gateway Bookbindery, and Plastikoil – Gateway Bookbinding Systems Ltd.

What We Know For Sure…

Breast Friends Book Three

Breast Friends Book Three

What we know for sure is that creating a cookbook to raise funds to fight Breast Cancer really works.  Look at what the Breast Friends have done.  Since 2004 they’ve been ordering cookbooks from Gateway Publishing and even though when they started they were a small group of women from the prairies with a fundraising idea, today they are a true charitable Foundation.

Breast Friends has donated over $1,000,000 in the aid to fight Breast Cancer.  They’ve published 4 editions of their cookbook series with Gateway with a 5th on the way.  Over the years they have placed more than 35 orders with us.  What we didn’t know for sure back in 2004 was how successful they would become.

October is Breast Cancer month.  Create a fundraising cookbook with Gateway Publishing and raise funds in the fight against Breast Cancer.

Garlic Festival Cookbook A Huge Hit!

GarlicCoiledGateway Publishing is always very pleased to publish community fundraising cookbooks and this past summer we were able to help out several community clubs with their fundraising. One of the most intriguing was for a garlic festival taking place in Lac La Hache, British Columbia.

Lac La Hache is a very small community located in the Central Interior of B.C.  It is home to one of the oldest organizations, The Lac La Hache Community Club, which has a long and impressive record of achievements and dedication to the community.  The Community Club is comprised of hard working volunteers who work together to support various social and sporting events, making Lac La Hache a great family oriented community.

One of the most recent events was the South Cariboo Garlic Fest held August 27 and 28th.  All the highlights about the garlic fest can be viewed on their main web page – www.garlicfestival.ca.

The Garlic Fest has grown substantially from last year, more vendors and more traffic in the grounds.  Making its debut at the recent garlic fest was a cookbook called Strictly Garlic featuring 175 garlic-loaded recipes.  The recipes include appetizers, meats, salads, dressings, soups, vegetables and pickles/relishes.   The cost of the book is $10 and shipping costs in Canada for 1 book is $2.31, 2 books $3.20.

To place an order for a book please email Barb Hansen at bhansen@bcinternet.net providing name and address.  Any cheques or money orders must be made payable to Lac La Hache Community Club, once funds are received  (including shipping costs) the books will be automatically shipped out.

Thank you for taking the time to read about their little community, they are actively fundraising for other new projects they have in the works.  Any funds they generate always revert back into the community; profits from last year’s garlic fest were used to drill a well at the festival grounds.

St. James Presbyterian Church Marks 100 Year Milestone!

St. James Presbyterian Church is celebrating 100 years as a congregation.  They chose to mark this milestone with the theme of “Remembering, Rejoicing and Rededicating.”

StThe Celebration Committee and the congregation embraced three projects that held to their theme and highlighted their goals as a Christian community:

 1.  They determined to give Winnipeg Harvest 100 items from their top ten most wanted list, choosing a different item each month from September to June.  With God’s help, they have reached and surpassed this goal each month.

 2.  They determined to give Siloam Mission 100 hours of service.  they enlisted a team of ten different volunteers on four different Saturdays to prepare and serve lunch at Siloam Mission.  With God’s help, they have had a full roster on each volunteer day.

 3.  They determined to support Inner City Youth Alive in their mission to provide a healthy breakfast to inner city students who would go to school hungry otherwise.  They can provide 100 breakfasts for $236.00.  The St. James Youth prepared and hosted a baked potato lunch for the congregation after worship hoping to raise enough funds to provide 100 breakfasts.  With God’s help, they raised enough money for 150 breakfasts.

One of the things they are joyously celebrating is 100 years of hospitality. Over these 100 years they have offered a warm welcome to worship and ready inclusion to groups.  Everyone has benefitted from the happy coincidence that in so many cases, a warm, generous heart went hand-in-hand with a special talent in the kitchen.  From welcome lunches for newcomers, through meals to precede Alpha study, and muffins before Bible Study, to fund-raising Soup and Pie lunches and bake sales, St. James has been blessed with remarkable talent in their kitchens.

They published a cookbook twenty years ago which is much treasured and much used. But it didn’t have all their favourites.  They worried that certain favourite recipes might get forgotten. They put out a call for their 100 favourite recipes.  Some recipes were submitted multiple times showing they were favourites indeed.

Many recipes have been gathered carefully over time.  Individuals carefully saved hand-written notes that are cherished as they were specialties of congregants who have retired from bringing these tasty morsels.  Some of their older members moved on to living without full kitchens.  Other members have died and their generous hearts are remembered by using their recipes and trying to achieve the same satisfying results.

Gateway Publishing has helped this congregation preserve cherished recipes and cherished memories from 100 years of gathering together. At the same time, the St. James Presbyterian Church congregation has been able to reach their fundraising goals by the sales of their cookbook. Let Gateway help YOUR congregation or organization do the same.

Step Up To The Plate!

Gateway Publishing is pleased to have been able to assist the ROOKIES CAGES group in their fundraising project. Baseball, perhaps more than any other sport, consists of a tightly knit community of teams, players, coaches, fans and families. What better than a cookbook fundraiser when cooking and eating also highlights the same spirit of togetherness and fun?

And speaking of baseball, here is the intro to “STEP up to the PLATE“:

This cookbook is DEDICATED to the ROOKIES COACHES who have generously shared their wisdom, knowledge, skills and passion with their players.

Baseball is more than just a national past time. It’s a game that brings people together…families, friends, team mates and countries. Baseball is a place where everyone can be a hero. It’s about dreams and history and tradition. It’s about families, friendly fans, hotdogs and sunny days at the park. It’s about fun!

We need baseball. We need the lessons it teaches us about teamwork and dedication. It gives us lessons in integrity, pride, cooperation, aspiration and inspiration. Part of learning is to have a good teacher. All of ROOKIES’ instructors have professional sports and /or teaching backgrounds. They are highly skilled and trained instructors that have achieved great levels of success in athletics. Most importantly, they are passionate about baseball and learning. They will help the player acquire the proper skills to follow their baseball dreams and they encourage the player to DREAM BIG!

ROOKIES strive to make their customers feel that they are in a professional environment. ROOKIES focuses on developing their players to reach their potential both on and off the field through diligent training and life skills. Their focus is on the player’s character as much as their baseball abilities. ROOKIES’ objective is to help the player move to the next level of competition when seeking College or University opportunities.

Eat Well, Live Well – Delicious and Healthy Recipes!

Vive Integrative Health Group Cookbook

Vive Integrative Health Group Cookbook

Gateway recently published an intriguing new cookbook, chock full of delicious recipes that are gluten-free and/or detox-friendly. The cookbook was so attractive and so appealing, we decided to interview one of the authors, Dr. Colin Race, of Vive Integrative Health Group, for our blog:

Gateway:  Why did you write the cookbook?

Dr. Race: We wrote the cookbook out of a strong need from our patients.  We routinely ask our patients to avoid certain types of foods either because of food sensitivities or for their detoxification program.  This book gives these patients a resource to help make their transition to hypoallergenic or gluten-free eating easy!

Most patients are surprised by the ease at which they are able to change their eating patterns.  The recipes in the book not only healthy and avoid certain types of foods (the more typically problematic foods in terms of food sensitivities), but are also delicious, which makes everybody happy.

Gateway:  What made you think of the idea to list the Detox or Gluten details at the top of the page?

Dr. Race: We included these just for easy reference.  The detox-friendly recipes are “hypoallergenic” meaning they do not include foods that most commonly aggravate those with food sensitivities, including wheat, dairy, eggs, red meat, soy, certain fruits and vegetables (bananas, citrus, melons, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes), added sugars/flavours/colours, unhealthy oils, coffee and alcohol.

The gluten-free recipes of course avoid the gluten containing grains: wheat, rye, barley and spelt.  Oats are sometimes said to contain gluten, but they don’t naturally.  Gluten-free people will often avoid oats anyways because they can be cross contaminated with wheat during processing and packaging.

Gateway:  Was this a long time in the works?  Did you test some of the recipes?

Dr. Race: Yes, the book was a long time in the works.  We have been collecting recipes for years, and have intended to format the collection into a print form for a long time, but other projects had taken priority.  Finally, with the support of our staff, we were able to complete the project.

Also yes, we have tested many of these recipes.  We ourselves do a three week detoxification twice per year, and will sometimes do shorter seven or ten day detoxes in between if we feel we need the energy boost!  But even in regular day-to-day life, these are recipes we make very often because they are healthy and delicious.

Gateway:  Are you happy with the cookbook?

Dr. Race: The cookbook looks great, couldn’t be happier!
Gateway:  How did you hear about us?

Dr. Race: A colleague of ours in Winnipeg had used Gateway books some time ago to print a cookbook for the Provincial Naturopathic Association. We are very pleased with the results…and by the way, thanks for including us in your blog!

School Fundraising Success!

St. Andrew's School Cookbook

St. Andrew's School Cookbook

When our School Council first decided to publish a fundraising cookbook, we knew it would be a huge undertaking requiring much time and effort.  After searching the internet and looking through council members’ personal community cookbook collections, we decided to use Gateway Publishing, a company with over 40 years experience publishing community cookbooks.  Looking back, what a wise decision that was!

Right from the very beginning, the staff at Gateway were quick to respond to all of our questions and concerns.  They maintained a pleasant and helpful manner throughout the entire process, even during their busiest time of year when many deadlines needed to be met.  They always took our calls, or returned our calls promptly if a message was left.  Although we knew that they were dealing with many different projects at one time, their patience and attention to detail made us feel like we were their only customer!

The introduction package we received in the mail was also incredibly helpful.  In addition to a sample cookbook, it contained a guide for formatting and marketing our project.  This guide answered many of our initial questions and drew our attention to a number of issues which we had not even considered or prepared for.

We submitted print-ready materials for our cookbook which included custom-designed covers, chapter dividers and information inserts.  The cookbooks were completed on schedule and the finished product was exactly as we had hoped.  Sales were strong and the response was very positive.  As a fundraising effort, the St. Andrew’s School Celebrates the Seasons Cookbook was a great success, and we owe much of that success to the guidance we received from the experts at Gateway Publishing.  What a wise choice we made indeed…

Breast Wishes For Christmas: Another Big Success

Breast Friends Christmas Cookbook

Breast Friends Christmas Cookbook

They’ve already raised more than a million dollars to support breast cancer research through sales of a best-selling series of cookbooks. And if that’s not enough, the Breast Friends recently managed to slay a group of “dragons”  — in their own den!

In early December, on an episode of the CBC television show “Dragons’ Den”, Foam Lake, Saskatchewan’s ten Breast Friends asked the dragons for a $25,000 investment to help them market their cookbooks, which includes the newest addition to the line-up: “Breast Wishes for Christmas”. The five venture capitalists were so impressed with — and moved by — the ladies’ selfless efforts that they offered $50,000 to help the Breast Friends cause.

That successful Canadian TV appearance was recently augmented by publicity in not one, but TWO European magazines. The Breast Friends were featured in the November 2010 issue of Gourmand Magazine, a Spanish publication (dedicated to cookbooks) that is widely distributed in Europe. The group’s success was also covered in the December 2010 issue of Logberg Heimskringla, an Icelandic newspaper serving North America.

A few months from now, Breast Friends will take their inspiring story — and their cookbooks — worldwide when they participate in the 2011 Paris Cookbook Fair, the first international exhibition of fundraising cookbooks, which will feature entrants from 91 countries across the globe.

Factoring in their growing profile, the success of the Dragons’ Den appearance, and the enduring popularity of their coobooks, the Breast Friends have good reason for optimism in the future. In fact, Rhonda Pineau, Sales and Marketing Manager of Gateway Publishing’s cookbooks department notes that the group ordered 20,000 copies of their new book “Breast Wishes for Christmas” last summer and then ordered 20,000 more thanks to the Dragon’s support.

“We’re so happy for the Breast Friends and their continuing success,” says Rhonda. “They are truly an inspiration and we’re very proud to have been able to help them make their dreams into a reality. We wish them all the best and look forward to even greater things in the year ahead!”
